500 word essay on improvements AS - A2

Over the last 2 years of studying media I have developed and built upon many skills. For my foundation portfolio I was set the task to create my own music magazine called ‘Red rage’, I chose to do a horror magazine with a target audience of both genders ages 16-24. One thing that was definitely new to me was using a camera effectively to capture professional looking shots and to ensure the picture did not come out blurry. The next biggest challenge was using Photoshop but once I got used to using it, this came in very handy as I was able to edit and merge my pictures until I was happy with the final product. Not understanding how to function the camera limited my creativity as I wasn’t able to get the perfect picture I was going for it also wasted a lot of time, however it also gave me more of a chance to play around and experiment with different settings and find out which one I believe suited my genre more. Also I didn’t know much about the typical conventions associated with Rock s

Media Language Analysis

Horror films use established signs and codes in their conventions to signify deeper meaning, in my A2 horror trailer we used red colors in less obvious places for example on the nails, this connotes danger and blood as red is a warning color. Theorist Roland Barthes talks about semiotic, which is the study of signs, or the social production of meaning by sign systems, of how things come to have significance by meaning. He mentions two identifies orders of signification. This is denotation and connotation, one talks about the actual object and the other talks about the hidden meaning behind the object. In my summer trailer we used the typical teen characters such as the slut, the jock, the nerd and the final girl, we decided to use these particular characters to represent teen punishment as a sub-genre , this was purposely used as red is a danger color. One common denotation in horror movies is dark settings, this is used because it connotes fear and danger as many peoples fear is the

Representation essay

The theory of Male Gaze was created by Laura Mulvey, this theory is that the camera will be positioned in a way that we are able to view the women's body parts for example her curves leaving us being able to see from a mans perspective. The male gaze leads to hegemonic ideologies within our society. Mulvey states that women are used for 2 functions in most films, as an erotic object for the characters within the narrative to view or as an erotic object for the spectators in the cinema to view. I don't believe that this theory really relates to my trailer however it could have some relevance, the as the monster watches his victims and we see the girls from his perspective. The strengths of this theory is that it does have a lot of relevance to today's society and males view on women as more of a sexual object than a human, it also creates awareness towards today's problems. The weakness' of this theory is that you cant put it into action for every film. Some horror f

Narrative Essay

Todorov was one narrative theorist, he came up with the theory that in most movies there is an equilibrium which is the normal story, for example in my trailer this is the main character (jennifer) trying to sleep at night peacfully as she would usually do every other night, then comes the disequilibrium which refers to a distruption in the peace usually by the villlian, in the case of my trailer this would be my villain entering her dreams making it hard for her to sleep then impacting on all her friends by killing one of them. Then last the resolution, this is how the situation if fixed, in the end of my film the villain would be killed my the main character who is the final girl. However for my trailer we would not include the resolution as that would kill the ending of the film and no one would want to go and watch it. My trailer does conform to these rules to a certain extent as I have the equilibrium, and the disequilibrium, the only thing it does not include is the resolution bu

Cabin In The Woods Analysis

Cabin In The Woods Analysis Cabin in the woods is about five teenagers who decide to spend their weekend in a lone cabin in the centre of the woods. Once they arrive, they find themselves very segregated from the world around them. The door leading to the basement opens by itself, and the confused teens decide to check out what’s down there. They manage to find a load of ancient objects, one of the characters decides to open a book and read it to the rest of the group, by reading the Latin she brings back to earth a family of dead zombies. They are also being watched by a global organisation who have been given the task of offering pain and blood to ancient gods who if brought back will destroy the whole of mankind. The film uses many well-known traditional codes and conventions of supernatural and slasher films, using elements from ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ it also makes good use of the friendship group you see in slasher films, there is a typical jock, the typical ‘dumb blon
